Understanding your options when California law requires physical presence
⚖️ California Law: In-Person Requirement
California does not permit standard Zoom or fully online weddings. State law requires the couple and officiant to be physically present in the same location for the ceremony to be legally valid.
During the pandemic, some counties (like Alameda) offered temporary virtual options under executive orders, but these have mostly expired. To get married in California, you must be physically present in California with your officiant.
✅ Both Are Legal Marriages
Utah online marriages and California in-person marriages are both legally valid in the United States. The difference is where you need to be and how quickly you get your certificate. This comparison helps you understand which option best fits your specific situation.
