Marin County Marriage License: How to Get It (and Your Certified Copies) All in One Trip
Getting a Marin County marriage license is one of the easiest parts of the whole process — if you know the order to do things in. Here’s exactly how it works, from your online application to same-day certified copies.
Couples are often surprised by how simple the Marin County marriage license process is compared to other Bay Area counties. Because my paperwork appointment is just a few minutes from the County Clerk’s Office, you can apply, sign, and walk away with certified copies in a single trip to San Rafael.
Here’s the order that works best.
📋 The Three-Stop Marin County Marriage License Process
- Step 1: Apply for your Marin County marriage license online
- Step 2: Visit the County Clerk’s Office in San Rafael together to finalize the license
- Step 3: Come to your appointment with me — I’m near San Rafael, ten minutes from the Marin County Clerk’s office
- Step 4: Return to the Clerk’s or Recorder’s Office for same-day certified copies
Step 1: Apply for Your Marriage License Online
Before you go anywhere in person, start your Marin County marriage license application online through the county’s Marriage License Application System. You’ll choose between a Public or Confidential license during this step.
A public license is the standard option, but it does require at least one witness present at your ceremony. A confidential license skips the witness requirement entirely and isn’t part of the public record — a popular choice for couples who’d rather keep things simple or private.
Step 2: Visit the County Clerk’s Office
Once your online application is submitted, both of you will need to appear together in person at the Marin County Clerk’s Office at the Civic Center in San Rafael. Bring valid photo ID — a U.S. or foreign passport, a Green Card, a U.S. driver’s license, or a consular ID all work (foreign driver’s licenses are not accepted). If either of you was divorced within the last few months, bring physical proof of that divorce as well; electronic copies aren’t accepted.
This is also where you’ll pay the licensing fee, so it’s worth confirming current pricing with the Clerk’s Office directly before your appointment.
Step 3: Come to Your Appointment With Me
Once your marriage license is in hand, you’ll head to me for your ceremony. My location is near San Rafael, ten minutes from the Marin County Clerk’s office — close enough that most couples treat the whole day as one simple loop rather than a scattered errand run.

After your ceremony, your signed license needs to be returned and registered before certified copies exist. Once that’s done, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate in person at the Recorder’s Office or the County Clerk’s Office with valid photo ID — most copies are printed and certified while you wait, so there’s no need to schedule a separate trip back to Marin later.
If you’d rather understand the certified copies process in more detail first, I’ve also written about California marriage license certified copies and same-day copies at SF City Hall, which walks through how that comparison process works if your ceremony happens in the city instead.

Why Couples Choose Marin for a Simple Ceremony
The short distance between the Clerk’s Office and my location is exactly why so many couples choose a Marin County marriage license over navigating a busier office elsewhere. Between the online application, a quick stop for the license itself, and a ceremony minutes away, most couples are married and holding a certified copy before the day is over.
